Does this Church read/preach from the Bible?
Simple answer? Of course!
Longer answer: Each week there will be at least three readings from the Bible that will be read by a member of our congregation. A short introduction to these readings can be found in your bulletin, and a Bible can be found in the back of each pew for you to read along with.
Of course, you are welcome to use your own Bible and follow along. We usually read from the New Revised Standard Version - Updated Edition, but whatever Bible you choose to use is fine by us!
What does worship usually look like/what should I expect?
Our worship connects us with Christians across all times and places. The service may look a little different if you’re new, but it’s rooted in patterns the Church has followed for centuries.
You’ll see the pastor, acolytes, and assisting ministers in white robes—symbols of baptism that remind us to focus on God’s word rather than what anyone is wearing.
We begin with Confession and Forgiveness, honestly admitting where we’ve fallen short and hearing God’s promise of grace. From there, we join in ancient songs, listen to readings from Scripture, and hear a short sermon (about 10–15 minutes) that connects God’s story to our lives today.
Together we sing, confess our faith in the Creed (a statement of belief Christians have used for thousands of years), and lift our prayers. At the center of worship is Holy Communion, where we receive the body and blood of Christ (bread and wine/grape juice)- strengthening us to be Christ’s body in the world.
Finally, a closing hymn sends us back into daily life, called and equipped to live as God’s people.
I'm completely new to the Church, what should I do?
Very simply, just follow along and join us to worship God. It doesn't matter if we do everything "right." It only matters that we show up and be who God made you to be!
You don't have to know all of the "right" responses, but we hope they're pretty easy to follow in our bulletin. The congregation will say the bolded parts while a leader will say the things that aren't. After the service, stop by and talk to our pastor on the way out. He'd love to get to know you a bit, and answer any questions you have.
What should I wear?
Whatever makes you most comfortable. You'll see anything from a t-shirt and shorts to a dress or suit and tie.
Do I have to give money?
No, you definitely don't have to give money to be welcome here at Emmanuel. We don't want to make you give money or feel awkward if you can't, or want to get to know us a bit more before you know where your money is put to use!
You’ll see an offering plate at the front of the worship space. During the service, it’s brought forward as a sign of gratitude. We try really hard to make sure that you know that what you give goes back into the Church and into the community. We also offer an online giving option with a QR code found on the last page of your bulletin.
Can I take Communion?
We offer Communion (the body and blood of Christ) each week during our worship. Traditionally, Communion has been understood as the meal of the baptized people of God. Simply put, this is Christ's table. As such, YOU are welcome.
Many refrain from taking Communion before they have been baptized, but if you haven't please talk to our pastor about baptism. All are welcome to receive Communion. If you prefer not to receive, you’re invited to come forward for a blessing instead. Just come forward and place your arms over your chest as a sign that you only want to receive a blessing. Gluten Free wafers and grape juice are available for those that need it.
Are my children welcome in worship?
Absolutely! We believe kids learn how worship works by being there. Now of course, kids can get loud sometimes, and a bit squirmy, but we welcome that! We encourage you to sit near the front, and talk about what is going on with your kids. If you feel more comfortable stepping out for a couple of minutes, we have some small toys in our parlor that can be brought out. You will still be able to hear the service, so feel free to come back in as you're able. On the other side of our building, we have a nursery that is available where you will also be able to hear our worship service.
